Peter and Paul’s Fortress is the birthplace of St. Petersburg. It was founded as a military fortification on 16 (27) May in 1703 in the delta of Neva river specially to protect future St. Petersburg city which was considered by Peter I. The fortress used to be a sinister political prison, and reminded a detached town on an island in the very heart of St. Petersburg. So, additionally, it is possible to include the visit to the Trubetskoy Bastion Prison into your tour. Also the Fortress is famous for its Peter and Paul’s Cathedral which is the burial place of the Romanovs dynasty (from Peter I to Nickolas II) and still is the highest and one of the oldest historical buildings of the city.
